According to researchers from the University of Southern Maine in the USA, if the Earth were to stop suddenly, the wind, water, and buildings would continue to move in accordance with this inertia. If the Earth suddenly stopped rotating, everything on its surface would change instantly. Anything not fixed would continue to move at the same speed it had before the stop. This speed is enormous compared to the daily motion we experience. In this scenario, most objects on Earth would be instantly destroyed. At the equator, the Earth moves at a speed of about 1,668 kilometers per hour. This speed decreases as one approaches the poles, being about 1,278 kilometers per hour in New York City and approaching zero at the poles.
