Rare Superman Comic Sells for Record $9.12 Million

A copy of the first-ever issue of "Superman" comic, discovered in an attic of a home in California last year, sold for $9.12 million at an auction, becoming the most expensive comic book in history. Three brothers from Northern California found the rare "Superman #1" while cleaning their late mother's attic. The 1939 issue was stored in a cardboard box and was in such excellent condition that the Dallas-based auction house "Heritage Auctions" considered it "the highest-graded copy ever". The youngest of the brothers, in their 50s and 60s, stated it was not just a valuable collectible but a testament to memory, family, and the unexpected ways the past finds its way back to us. The brothers revealed that these comics were a "treasured refuge" from their childhood in a cramped apartment. The auction house noted that what drove the magazine's value was not just its pristine condition but also that it was part of the first print run by "DC", which reached 500,000 copies. Lon Allen, Heritage's vice president, expressed his delight with the result, adding that "Superman #1" is a landmark in pop culture history, and this copy is not only in unprecedented condition but also has a story worthy of a movie. He added that the price reflects that, and it's an honor for Heritage to have sold this iconic comic. The previous record was set by an "Action Comics No. 1" issue, which first introduced Superman in 1938 and was sold by the same auction house for $6 million last year. Prior to that, another "Superman #1" issue topped the charts in 2022 when it sold in a private deal for $5.3 million. Since his debut, Superman has become one of the most famous and enduring figures in American pop culture, inspiring blockbuster movies, books, games, and even gum.
