The comedian Conan O'Brien continued sharing his prepared jokes for the awards ceremony. After an initial joke directed at actress Karla Sofía Gascón at the beginning of the ceremony, in which he asked her to call him Jimmy Kimmel if she tweeted about the gala, the comedian decided to make another quite strong comment, this time about rapper Kendrick Lamar.
During the gala, Conan O'Brien took the moment to joke that it was the perfect time for Kendrick to appear on stage. "Well, we're halfway through the show, which means it's time for Kendrick Lamar to come out and call Drake a pedophile," the host said amidst the silence in the theater. Despite the controversial nature of the joke, Conan assured that they would not face legal issues for his words.
At one point during the broadcast, Conan O'Brien interacted with the audience with a comment intended to generate laughter, however, the joke about Kendrick Lamar received mixed reactions. Although the comedian usually resorts to provocative humor, this time his joke created an awkward moment at the ceremony.
