Four people were killed and ten others injured in a shooting that occurred during a children's birthday party in Stockton, northern California (USA), official sources confirmed.
The incident took place on Saturday evening at a restaurant in the city, and police, who believe the shooting may have been "targeted," are searching for a suspect.
Among the victims are children and adults, although at this time, no further details have been released about the identities of the deceased or the condition of the injured, some of whom have been taken to local hospitals.
The San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office reported that the shooting occurred shortly before 6:00 p.m. local time on Saturday (2:00 a.m. GMT Sunday) and assured that the investigation is ongoing and information remains limited.
"The initial indications suggest it may have been a targeted incident, and investigators are exploring all possibilities," the statement read.
"A birthday party should never be a place where families fear for their lives," it added.
Stockton Vice Mayor Jason Lee confirmed on social media that the incident occurred during a children's birthday party. "I am devastated and furious to learn of the mass shooting that occurred at a child's birthday party," he wrote.
"Detectives are actively working to determine the circumstances that led to this tragedy," the statement concluded.
