Buenos Aires, Feb. 18 (NA) – Eight skiers have died and one more is still missing after an avalanche occurred in recent hours in Nevada County, northern California. Nevada County Sheriff Shannan Moon said at a press conference that the avalanche buried a group of backcountry skiers in the Sierra Nevada, and it was the deadliest in the country in over four decades. Moon informed reporters that authorities have already notified the families of those involved that the rescue operation has officially become a recovery operation. According to Noticias Argentinas agency, eight bodies have been found and teams are working to bring the remains down the mountain and perform autopsies to determine the cause of death, authorities added. Last night, six survivors were rescued after search and rescue teams worked for several hours in blizzard conditions, the sheriff's office said, adding that two of the six rescued were taken to a hospital for treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.
