Europe Returns to the Moon Race with Artemis 2 Mission

The European Space Agency made a key contribution to the Artemis 2 mission, reasserting itself in crewed lunar flights after a 52-year hiatus.

Europe Returns to the Moon Race with Artemis 2 Mission

Europe played a major role in the recent moon exploration mission 'Artemis 2' and has its own plans for lunar exploration. During the 'Artemis 2' mission, led by NASA, four astronauts flew a figure-eight trajectory around the moon before returning to Earth the day before yesterday. Daniel Neuenschwander, Director of Human and Robotic Exploration at the European Space Agency (ESA), referring to crewed flights to the moon, said: 'We're back in the game.' The last crewed moon mission was in 1972. Neuenschwander added: 'The current moon mission would not have been possible at all without the propulsion system provided by the European Space Agency.' ESA provided the so-called European Service Module for this mission, supplying the astronauts with oxygen, water, and electricity. European astronauts are also expected to participate in one of the 'Artemis' missions soon.
