Karol G Makes History as First Latina Coachella Headliner

Karol G became the first Latina artist to headline the Coachella Festival with an explosive and sensual performance that celebrated her culture and the unity of Latin America. "I am very happy and very proud, but at the same time it feels late," said Karol G, whose real name is Carolina Giraldo Navarro, to a crowd that greeted her with flags from different Latin American countries. The Colombian singer highlighted the path paved by other Latino artists before her: "Before me, there were so many incredible Latino artists, so this is not just about me, it's about my Latino community, my people; and at the same time, it's for my Latinos who have had it bad in this country lately." The show started 30 minutes late and opened with a video narrating the legend of an untamable young woman who reclaims her power after being subjugated: "Always wild, always free, Latina forever," the piece warned. Next, Giraldo Navarro appeared on the main stage, which emulated a cave, surrounded by dancers lit by neon lights, and opened her performance with the song 'Latina Forever'. The show featured sensual, energetic, and erotic choreography. The first part was marked by the classic sound of reggaeton, with Mariah Angeliq as a guest, who came on stage to perform 'El Makinon'. The second segment took a more retro and tropical tone when the 'Bichota' performed 'Tropicoqueta' and 'Papacito' from her latest studio album. Giraldo Navarro paid homage to Mexico by performing her song 'Ese hombre es malo' with a mariachi band, and later had Becky G as a second guest to sing the hit 'MAMIII'. "Up Mexico, up Colombia, and all immigrants!" Becky G shouted. Among the Colombian singer's guests, Wisin also stood out, who got the crowd dancing to classic reggaeton hits like 'Rakata' and 'Pam Pam'; and Greg Gonzalez, guitarist of Cigarettes After Sex, with whom Karol G had a more intimate and melancholic moment by presenting an unreleased song about grief. Giraldo Navarro also included snippets of songs from other Latin legends like Willie Colón's 'La Murga', Daddy Yankee's 'Rompe', and performed Gloria Estefan's 'Mi tierra', which deals with the nostalgia of leaving the place where you were born. The show culminated with 'Provenza' and fireworks in the sky.
