Millions of Americans will continue to be under a dangerous cold wave this weekend. In Philadelphia, the last two weeks, with temperatures at 0 °C (32 °F) or lower, have been the coldest in 65 years, while in Washington, a similar cold spell has not been recorded in three decades, with nine consecutive days at 0 °C or below. According to the channel, these lows are about 16 °C (almost 30 °F) below normal for this time of year. In New York, where streets are still being cleared of accumulated snow, the temperature could drop to -16 °C (3 °F) this Saturday. For many cities, this dangerous consecutive cold wave has set records. The National Weather Service (NWS) reports that a low-pressure system is developing off the Carolinas that will head toward the southeast this Friday and bring light snow to the Mid-Atlantic (New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Virginia, West Virginia, and Washington). The most intense effects are expected in the Carolinas and southern Virginia, which will also have strong winds during the weekend and significant coastal flooding. Some of its cities could receive between 15 and 30 centimeters of snow, which will begin to fall on Saturday and extend into Sunday. «A major winter storm will begin in the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic on Friday,» with a combination of polar cold, snow, and winds, arriving with dangerously cold temperatures and could cause power outages, the NWS noted. The cold wave will even extend to Florida, which will experience these low temperatures at least until next week, potentially affecting crops. The cold alert extends from Canada to the southern United States. Americans are still suffering the effects of last weekend's snowfall and cold wave, which caused several deaths, power outages, and flight and school cancellations. Nashville (Tennessee) and Tupelo (Mississippi) are two of more than two dozen southern cities that could set records on Saturday for the low temperatures, according to CNN. In Nashville, where electrical infrastructure was damaged by the past storm, thermometers could drop to -6 °C (21 °F), while Tupelo is forecast to reach -3 °C (27 °F).
