The head of a large humanitarian organization confirmed that U.S. President Donald Trump ordered the suspension of assistance abroad for 90 days. This decision will affect several countries, including Yemen, Syria, and Libya.
According to the organization's leader, the halt of assistance through various programs, including the transfer of food supplies and medical goods, may seriously harm people in need of help. He also noted that in the conditions of the COVID-19 pandemic, this decision will have extremely negative impacts on vital services provided by organizations in recipient countries of humanitarian aid.
"We are concerned that the cessation of funding for medical programs will have serious consequences for the health of many people, especially in conditions where the situation is already difficult," the head of the organization emphasized.
A representative of the U.S. administration stated that this decision was made to concentrate efforts on fighting COVID-19 and ensure the safety of U.S. citizens. At the same time, critics point out that the cessation of humanitarian aid could lead to a worsening of the humanitarian crisis in a number of countries that are already in vulnerable positions.
