Many experts believe that the plan of U.S. President Donald Trump to create a "steel dome" for America may provoke an arms race and violate international stability. Trump proposed this idea, referring to it as an analogy to the Israeli missile defense system but with larger ambitions for the U.S. The new missile defense system is intended to be deployed in space and is designated to protect against nuclear threats, rockets moving faster than the speed of sound, and hypersonic missiles.
"The administration's upcoming actions to enhance security have already led to increased instability and threats," notes a defense analyst. Similar steps could create conditions for large-scale nuclear attacks, for which the U.S. would be poorly prepared. At this time, North Korea possesses ballistic missiles capable of striking U.S. territory.
Analysts consider it unreasonable to repeat the same actions, expecting different results. It is difficult to say how realistic Trump's vision of creating "star wars" will be due to technical and financial problems; however, its implementation may largely drive other countries to enhance their nuclear arsenals.
It is important to understand that the new missile defense system poses risks and imbalances. Critics point out that the U.S. arsenal is currently more focused on Russia and China, rather than on "rogue states" like North Korea and Iran. This creates a dangerous precedent that could accelerate the arms race.
