New York Governor Kathy Hochul rejected the removal of New York City Mayor Eric Adams after the U.S. Department of Justice cleared him of a corruption case. However, she decided to limit his powers and oversee matters in the Big Apple.
In a statement, Adams pledged to work with the governor to strengthen trust in government, despite many claiming he yielded to the anti-immigrant demands of the Trump Administration. Pressure on Hochul to remove Adams significantly increased following the Department of Justice's order, leading to resignations within the Democratic Party.
Hochul chose not to initiate a removal process at that time, preferring to leave the decision to New Yorkers in the upcoming November elections. However, she proposed granting more powers to other institutional bodies to oversee the activities of the city government and ensure its independence.
The governor stated that her goal is to stabilize the city, restore calm, and ensure that services continue uninterrupted. She explained that a special inspector general position will be created to oversee the city's Department of Investigations and ensure its impartiality.
Adams, a Democrat, has faced criticism for his relationship with former President Donald Trump and his stance on the detention of immigrants who have committed crimes. Despite this, Hochul decided to keep him in office and work together for the benefit of the city.
