In court in Hawaii, anesthesiologist Gerhard Keunig (46 years old) was presented before the judges, accused of attempted second-degree murder after he was accused of trying to kill his wife, Ariel Keunig (36 years old) with a rock, striking her and attempting to suffocate her with an unknown substance during her birthday celebrations on March 24 on the island of Oahu, reports People magazine.
During the preliminary hearing on Monday, April 7, Keunig pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.
Before the start of the hearing, his attorney, Thomas Otachi, stated that the situation is "more complicated than it seems," adding that the history of his client will become clear during the established time in the course of the trial, emphasizing that "there are two sides to every story," and so far only one is known.
According to the wife’s version, the husband’s attack occurred after she refused to be photographed with him, as a result of which she had been attempting to be thrown from a precipice, then violently beaten and they attempted to suffocate her with an unknown substance.
Regarding the wife’s testimony against Keunig under duress, she stated that her husband had attacked her over the span of months and began to control her communication and isolate her since December of last year after accusing her of infidelity.
The case remains open to several possible outcomes, with the expectation that the defense will present new evidence that may alter the course of events.
