Zohran Mamdani, a 34-year-old state assembly member and Democrat, defeats former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa to become the first Muslim mayor of America's largest city.
"This is a historic moment for New York City and for the entire country," Mamdani stated after the results were announced. "We have proven that our city unites people of all faiths and nationalities."
Mamdani's victory marked the end of an era in which the mayor's post had been held exclusively by representatives of Christian denominations.
