Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani, a staunch opponent of former U.S. President Donald Trump, has been elected Mayor of New York. He will become the first Muslim mayor of the largest city in the United States and will take office on January 1st. With this victory, Mamdani makes history as the first Muslim to hold the office of New York City Mayor, the first person of South Asian descent, and the first African American to hold the position. He will also become the youngest mayor of the city in over a century when he assumes his duties on January 1st.
Former President Trump had threatened to cut federal funding to New York City if Mamdani won the mayoral election. In a post on Truth Social, Trump labeled Mamdani a "communist," stating that he would leave the city "with zero chance of success or even survival."
In Virginia, moderate Democrat Abigail Spanberger easily won the race for governor of the state.
