34-Year-Old Muslim Elected Mayor of New York

Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani, at just 34 years old, won the election in New York and thus became the second youngest mayor in the city's history and the first to hold the position while being Muslim. Mamdani received 50% of the vote and surpassed Andrew Cuomo, a three-term former governor and independent candidate, who secured 41%. According to projections with 90% of precincts counted by 22:00 Eastern Time in the US, this was an insurmountable difference. The new mayor had been first elected to the State Assembly in 2020, representing Astoria, Queens, one of the city's most progressive areas. Nearly 1.8 million New Yorkers cast their ballots to elect mayor, according to the New York City Board of Elections, in an election with a historic result. The figure includes over 735,000 registrations during last week's early voting period, which marked a record turnout for a non-presidential election in the city, reported CNN. Some of the highest levels of participation were recorded in Brooklyn—the city's most populous borough—where more than 395,000 people had voted by mid-afternoon. Cuomo, for his part, had been governor of New York three times (between 2011 and 2021) before resigning amid sexual harassment allegations. His father, Mario Cuomo, was also governor of New York for three terms (1983-1994). Completing the list of candidates were Curtis Sliwa (Republican), Irene Estrada (Conservative), and Joseph Hernández (Independent).

NEW JERSEY ELECTS GOVERNOR Democratic Representative Mikie Sherrill, 53, became the first female Democratic governor of New Jersey with her victory on Tuesday over Jack Ciattarelli, an ally of President Donald Trump. In this way, Democrats added another victory in a highly favorable day, following Mamdani's win in New York and Abigail Spanberger's in Virginia.
