Washington, Nov 5 (EFE).- U.S. President Donald Trump acknowledged Tuesday night that the Republican Party lost local elections and key contests in this electoral day, and argued that the reason was his name was not on the ballots and the federal government shutdown.

"Trump not being on the ballot and the government shutdown were the two reasons the Republicans lost the elections tonight, according to electoral analysts," Trump indicated in an initial post on the Truth Social social network written in all caps.

The president's reaction came after Republicans suffered a setback in various elections held on Tuesday.

The first defeat for Republicans came in Virginia, where Democrat Abigail Spanberger was elected the state's first female governor, defeating Republican Winsome Earle-Sears with about 55% of the vote.

Her victory marks the recovery of the governorship for the Democrats after four years under Republican rule and highlights an exodus of moderates who have distanced themselves from the Trump administration, which has been in power for eight months.

Meanwhile, in New Jersey, former Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill defeated Republican Jack Ciattarelli, a Trump ally, and extends the Democratic control of the state's executive branch.

Democrat Zohran Mamdani, for his part, won the New York mayoral election with over 50% of the vote, according to projections.

The 34-year-old Mamdani will be the youngest mayor of New York since 1892 and also the first Muslim, after defeating independent Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa.
