250,000 Venezuelans Go Into Hiding in US After TPS Ends

A quarter of a million Venezuelans face the threat of deportation from the United States after the expiration of their Temporary Protected Status (TPS). Since midnight on Friday, approximately 250,000 people have been left without protection from immigration authorities. Many migrants, like 38-year-old Oriana, prefer to remain in the shadows and live in the shadows rather than return to Venezuela. She acknowledges that she had a privileged position compared to migrants from other countries but has not lost hope. The fight to preserve the status continues in the courts. TPS Alliance coordinator José Palma states that legal battles are not yet over, and an appeal will be heard in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. In total, 600,000 Venezuelans, including recipients of the 2023 TPS extension, are at risk. Lawyers note that those with prior deportation orders are at the highest risk. However, migrants can still apply for asylum, although this process is not easy.
