BBC Apologizes to Trump Over Documentary but Refuses to Pay Compensation

The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has apologized to US President Donald Trump for an episode of its Panorama program in which separate parts of his January 6, 2021 speech were edited together. However, the BBC rejected his demand for financial compensation. In a statement, the corporation said that while the BBC 'sincerely regrets the way the video clip was edited, we totally disagree that there is any basis for a defamation lawsuit.' In a letter dated November 9 and sent to the BBC by Trump's lawyers, the corporation was demanded to issue 'a full and fair retraction of the documentary,' apologize, and 'appropriately compensate' Trump for 'the damage caused.' The letter also states that the BBC must meet the demands this Friday, otherwise it will face 'legal action' and damages of at least $1 billion. The program was criticized for editing together video clips of Trump's January 6, 2021 speech in such a a way that it allegedly created the misleading impression that he had urged his supporters to march to the Capitol and 'fight like hell' to prevent Joe Biden's inauguration.
