US Restricts Visas for Nicaraguans

The United States has restricted visas for Nicaraguan citizens, accusing them of facilitating illegal immigration. According to the State Department, half of the visas were canceled due to aggression, theft, and driving under the influence of alcohol. 'Investigations indicate that the entities representing these individuals facilitated transit through Nicaragua due to the permissive migration policies of the Nicaraguan dictatorship, which destabilizes the region and drives illegal immigration to the United States,' the Department stated in a communiqué, without specifying the identity of those sanctioned. Among those affected by these sanctions are the owners, executives, and high-ranking officials of transportation companies, travel agencies, and tour operators that provide services to help foreigners whom the government claims intend to 'illegally immigrate' to the United States. This measure adds to the long list of anti-immigration policies of the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump, who since his return to power has focused on fulfilling his promise to drastically reduce migration to the United States. So far this year, the U.S. government has canceled more than 80,000 visas for various reasons. The U.S. Department of State.
