The UN Security Council voted in favor of a US resolution that reinforces President Donald Trump's peace plan for Gaza, international media reported.
Trump celebrated the vote on Monday and wrote on his Truth Social network: "The PEACE DIRECTORATE is being recognized and backed, which I will preside over."
The resolution also calls for resuming large-scale humanitarian deliveries through the UN, the Red Cross, and the Red Crescent.
The peace plan authorizes the creation of an International Stabilization Force (ISF) that would work with Israel and Egypt, as well as with newly trained Palestinian police, to help secure border areas and demilitarize the Gaza Strip.
The ISF is mandated to work on the "permanent deactivation of weapons from non-state armed groups", protect civilians, and secure humanitarian corridors.
It also authorizes the formation of the "Peace Directorate", a transitional governing body for Gaza with a mandate until the end of 2027. The resolution also mentions a possible future Palestinian state.
Russia, which has veto power, circulated an alternative draft, saying that the US document does not go far enough in supporting the creation of a Palestinian state, notes the final report from the French media outlet.
This includes the deployment of an international force and a path towards a future Palestinian state, as Argentina's news agency learned through a report from RFI.
The Washington text garnered 13 votes in favor, and the vote was hailed as "historic and constructive" in the United States, despite the abstentions of Russia and China.
