Former U.S. Treasury Secretary Larry Summers announced on Monday that he will "withdraw from public commitments" following the publication of documents showing his email exchanges with the late financier Jeffrey Epstein.
"I am deeply ashamed of my actions and recognize the pain they have caused," said the emeritus dean and professor at Harvard University in a statement cited by U.S. media, as learned by the Argentine News Agency.
"I take full responsibility for my wrong decision to maintain communication with Mr. Epstein," Summers said.
"While I will continue to fulfill my teaching duties, I will withdraw from all public activities as part of my broader efforts to rebuild trust and repair relationships with those closest to me," he expressed.
This measure was taken after both Democrats and Republicans demanded that organizations cut ties with Summers, after the House Oversight Committee published email exchanges between Epstein and Summers from 2013 to 2019.
