Washington, Dec 17 (EFE). - U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio ruled out seeking the Republican presidential nomination for 2028 if current Vice President JD Vance decides to run to succeed Donald Trump.
"If JD Vance runs for president, he will be our candidate, and I will be one of the first people to support him," the head of American diplomacy stated in an interview with Vanity Fair, along with several members of Trump's cabinet.
Rubio, 54, and Vance, 41, are considered the main contenders to succeed Trump, who in 2028 will not be able to seek re-election having completed the two terms allowed by the Constitution.
During the photo session with Vanity Fair, Vance joked with photographers, offering them $1,000 if they could make him look better than Rubio.
Although for months Trump has hinted that he might seek re-election, this past October he endorsed the idea that Vance and Rubio form a joint ticket, without specifying who would head the ticket and who would be the vice president.
"I think that if at any point they formed a team, they would be unstoppable," he noted.
"I don't think anyone would run against us," he added.
In the same Vanity Fair interview, White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles stated that Trump has no intention of violating the 22nd Amendment, which prevents him from running again, although she acknowledged that he is "having fun" with his comments on the matter.
Marco Rubio, son of Cuban immigrants, was a prominent Republican senator from 2010 to 2025.
