Trump signs order to withdraw U.S. from 66 international organizations

Washington, Jan 8 (EFE). - U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Wednesday to withdraw the country from 66 international organizations and cease to be party to various international treaties that he considers contrary to national interests, including the withdrawal of 31 entities from the United Nations.

The presidential order instructs all executive departments and agencies to cease participation and funding of 35 entities not affiliated with the UN and 31 bodies within the UN system, following a review ordered by Trump to assess U.S. membership and financial support.

Among the non-UN entities that the U.S. considers contrary to its sovereignty and economic priorities are the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the Global Forum on Migration and Development, and the Coalition for Online Freedom.

Among the UN organizations from which the U.S. will withdraw are the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), among others.

The official document states that the measure is a response to these institutions operating «contrary to the national interests, security, economic prosperity, or sovereignty of the United States» and pursuing «globalist agendas» that do not align with Washington's priorities.

The White House stated that the withdrawals will end the funding of these organizations with U.S. taxpayer contributions and will allow the country to «reorient resources toward internal priorities and policies that favor its independence».

The announcement is part of a broader U.S. withdrawal from multilateral organizations, which already included the country's exit from the World Health Organization, the UN Human Rights Council, as well as the U.S. exit from 66 international organizations, including 31 UN entities.
