US Calls for Citizens to Leave Venezuela After Maduro's Arrest

The US has urged its citizens to leave Venezuela immediately, calling the security situation in the country 'unstable.' The State Department reported that armed groups known as 'colectivos' are setting up roadblocks and searching vehicles for evidence of American citizenship or support for the United States. Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, who is in detention in New York, said through his son in a video that 'we are okay.' Despite Maduro's arrest, the Trump administration left the door open for cooperation with the transitional authorities that took power after him. Venezuela has begun talks with American diplomats about resuming diplomatic relations, which were severed in 2019. Trump also expressed Washington's interest in exploiting Venezuela's oil after the ousting of Maduro.
