Trump holds call with Delcy Rodríguez

US President Donald Trump revealed on Wednesday that he had a telephone conversation with the acting president of Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez, whom he described as a "fantastic person".

"Today we had an excellent conversation and she is a fantastic person," Trump said to the press in the Oval Office of the White House. The Republican added that the call was "long", they discussed "many topics", and that the United States is "doing very well with Venezuela".

Trump made these statements one day before receiving Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado at the White House, who has for the time being been excluded by the United States from the transition in Venezuela.

Delcy Rodríguez, who was vice president during Nicolás Maduro's term, assumed the office after US special forces captured the Chavista leader and his wife, Cilia Flores, in Caracas on January 3, and took them to New York to be tried for drug trafficking.

Trump maintains that the United States maintains a guardianship over the Venezuelan government and has announced agreements to receive millions of barrels of Venezuelan crude oil.

Rodríguez reported this Wednesday that in recent days, 406 political prisoners have been released in the country and that the process of their release "remains open".

The acting president made these statements alongside her brother, the chief government negotiator, Jorge Rodríguez; and the Minister of the Interior, Diosdado Cabello.
