The President of the United Nations General Assembly, Annalena Baerbock, stated that the United States is also harming itself with its tariff policy in the dispute over Greenland. The former German Foreign Minister, in an interview with German radio station Deutschlandfunk, said that what US President Donald Trump is currently doing is 'like shooting oneself in the economic knee.' She added, 'The United States is deeply mired in debt and has an absolute interest in continuing trade.' Trump wants to bring Greenland under American control and has announced the imposition of new punitive tariffs on European countries due to their opposition to this. Baerbock quoted one of Trump's slogans, saying, 'America First' means 'America alone.' She pointed out that the UN Charter also allows for the imposition of economic and financial sanctions, and said, 'The Europeans are the largest domestic market in the world, and if the Europeans, in conjunction with other countries in the world, decide to take these measures, it will naturally have a huge impact.' Also referring to Russia's war in Ukraine, Baerbock said that if Trump succeeds in Greenland, 'no country in the world will be able to sleep peacefully and soundly in the future.' She emphasized that the international system is under attack and said the politician, who belongs to the Green Party, pointed out that Russia and China, as permanent members of the Security Council, are responsible for maintaining world peace. She added, 'If these two countries, in particular, do not take the rules of world peace seriously, then it is now the duty of everyone to show that they stand together as one.'
