US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that the United Nations (UN) should continue due to its potential, but the 'Peace Commission' proposed by himself 'could' replace the organization. During his press conference at the White House to commemorate the first anniversary of his second term, Trump repeatedly criticized the UN for being ineffective in ending wars, and added that it should continue to exist because 'the potential is so great.' The Peace Commission was originally proposed as part of a 20-point peace plan drafted by the United States to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and help rebuild the Gaza Strip. However, according to Xinhua News Agency, a draft of the Peace Commission Charter, allegedly attached to invitation letters sent to numerous world leaders, does not mention Gaza and instead outlines a vision of the body as a US-controlled organization aimed at helping to resolve conflicts and wars worldwide. Three other Western diplomats said that, if it proceeds, it would likely undermine the UN. 'The Secretary-General of the UN, Antonio Guterres, 'believes that Member States are free to associate in different groups,' said Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesperson for the UN Chief, in response to a question about the draft charter for the Peace Commission. 'This is a 'Trump UN' that ignores the foundations of the UN Charter,' said a diplomat quoted by Reuters.
