Washington, Jan. 24 (EFE).- U.S. federal authorities reported this Saturday that the agent who shot and killed a 37-year-old man today during massive raids against migrants in the city of Minneapolis has eight years of experience working in the Border Patrol (USBP). "The agent was highly trained and had eight years of experience as a Border Patrol agent. Fearing for his life and that of his colleagues, a Border Patrol agent fired in self-defense," explained Bovino. The high-ranking official added that medical teams immediately attended to the victim, who was declared dead at the scene, and that the individual "was also carrying two full magazines and had no identification visible." According to Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara, who reported today, the deceased man was a 37-year-old white man who apparently had a permit to carry a weapon and had no notable incidents with law enforcement. Bovino accused O'Hara and the city's mayor, Jacob Frey, of hiding the fact that the victim was armed and denounced the "constant attacks" on immigration agents during the large-scale operations they have been conducting in Minneapolis for a week, which have sparked strong rejection from the local population. The high-ranking official stressed that after today's incident, "about 200 protesters arrived at the scene and began to obstruct and assault agents" and requested collaboration from local authorities and the state of Minnesota, where Minneapolis is located. Both Frey and O'Hara, as well as Minnesota Governor Democrat Tim Walz, have asked the Trump government to end operations in the city after today's event is the second of its kind in just over two weeks. On January 7, agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) shot and killed a 37-year-old woman, Renee Good, in her car during an operation. The large-scale raids in Minneapolis—where the number of federal agents is five times greater than the entire city's police force—were ordered by the government of U.S. President Donald Trump in early January, when a documentary by a conservative 'youtuber' once again put the spotlight on cases of federal funds misappropriated by daycare centers managed by members of the Somali community. The agents attempted to disarm him, but he violently resisted. "He has extensive training as a security officer in shooting fields and as a specialized agent in the use of non-lethal weapons," explained Greg Bovino, a high-ranking USBP official, today at a press conference in Minneapolis.
