Meta Introduces Advanced Security Mode in WhatsApp for Journalists and Activists

Meta has introduced a new advanced security mode in its WhatsApp application for users who are at risk of cyberattacks. This feature is available on iPhone and macOS and includes three main restrictions: it disables most types of message attachments, blocks link previews, and imposes restrictions on FaceTime calls and web browsing. These three measures have been identified as potential tools for surveillance and advanced cyber intrusions. In a blog post, WhatsApp noted that while all user chats are protected by end-to-end encryption, "we also know that a small number of our users—such as journalists or public figures—may need maximum protection from rare and highly sophisticated cyberattacks." Natalia Krapiva, chief technology legal counsel at Access Now, a digital civil rights organization, stated that WhatsApp's feature "seems like an excellent addition" to features like Apple's Lockdown Mode and memory integrity protection, as well as Google's advanced protection. Krapiva added: "It's encouraging to see more companies enabling advanced security features to protect users most vulnerable to spyware." The new mode, called "Account Protection Settings," is a one-click button in WhatsApp settings that activates a series of defenses. These measures include blocking media and attachments from unknown senders, disabling link previews, and silencing calls from unknown contacts. She continued: "Implementing such free measures, which do not require advanced technical knowledge, will help stop spyware harm and prevent its future occurrence for millions of users, especially journalists, activists, and human rights defenders." Meta is the third major tech company to offer enhanced security for high-risk users. In 2022, Apple launched "Lockdown Mode," which it describes as "an optional extreme protection" designed for "the very few" who may be targeted by advanced digital threats. While litigation is a key tool in combating spyware, it may not be available to most victims due to high costs and legal barriers.
