The Australian social network UpScrolled has topped the download charts in US app stores due to the discontent of thousands of TikTok users over censorship of content critical of US policy following the recent restructuring of the platform in the country.
This surge comes after TikTok announced last Thursday a $14 billion deal to establish a US subsidiary of the platform, responsible for US data protection, algorithm security, content moderation, and software guarantees, thus avoiding a ban in the US.
Following the restructuring, some users accused the app of censoring political content, particularly related to criticism of the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service (ICE) or information about protests in Minneapolis after the death of a civilian, Alex Pretti, at the hands of officers last Saturday.
