Authorities in New Castle County, Delaware, reported on Tuesday that they have arrested the ex-husband of Jill Biden, former First Lady of the United States during Joe Biden's term (2021-2025), on suspicion of murdering his current wife in December. William Stevenson, 77, has been indicted by a grand jury on first-degree murder charges for allegedly killing his wife, Linda Stevenson, 64, on December 28, according to a statement. The suspect was arrested and subsequently processed and sent to the Howard Young Correctional Center after failing to post a $500,000 cash bail. In December, police had issued a statement that officers responded to a call about a domestic dispute at the couple's residence in Wilmington. Upon entering the home, authorities found Linda Stevenson unconscious and attempted to save her life, but despite efforts, the woman was pronounced dead moments later. For now, police have not released further details on the cause of her death. Jill Biden married Stevenson in 1970 when she was 18 and he was 23, and their marriage lasted five years. In March 1975, Jill met Joe Biden, then a U.S. Senator from Delaware, and in May of that same year, she divorced Stevenson. The now-accused opened The Stone Balloon Club in that decade, a bar near the University of Delaware campus in Newark, New Jersey, that was frequented by artists like Bruce Springsteen or Dave Matthews, according to NBC News.
