US Supreme Court Ruling Reverses Oil Tariffs on Cuba

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that President Donald Trump exceeded his authority by using the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to impose tariffs on countries supplying oil to Cuba. This decision has reversed the additional penalties that were imposed on nations providing crude to the island. In January, following the capture of Nicolás Maduro, the Trump administration was forced to revoke these tariffs, citing the emergency economic powers law. However, as stipulated in the order signed on Friday, the 'national emergency' concerning Cuba 'remains in effect,' meaning that while current tariffs are lifted, future punishments are not prohibited. The removal of these tariffs, combined with other measures, has left the island severely affected by a lack of fuel. Photo EFE.
