US Accuses Sinaloa Cartel Leader of Drug Trafficking and Terrorism

The U.S. Department of Justice has brought serious charges against René Arzate García, alias 'La Rana,' alleged plaza boss of the Sinaloa Cartel in Tijuana. He is accused of large-scale drug trafficking, including fentanyl and cocaine, into the U.S., as well as material support for terrorism. Authorities are also offering a $5 million reward for information leading to his capture.

The DEA administrator stated, "We will continue to use all resources at our disposal to dismantle their operations and prevent more drugs and violence from reaching our communities." René Arzate García is a ruthless leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, accused of exploiting U.S. entry points to flood our nation with fentanyl, cocaine, and methamphetamine. Known for his extreme violence, Arzate García also participates in operations such as kidnappings and executions for the Sinaloa Cartel. This accusation supersedes a formal 2014 indictment for conspiracy to import marijuana and demonstrates that René Arzate García is a key member of the Sinaloa Cartel and controls the Tijuana plaza, encompassing the entire state of Baja California, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office. He is accused of importing thousands of kilograms of drugs, including methamphetamine, cocaine, fentanyl, and marijuana, into California and laundering millions of dollars from drug trafficking. Additionally, the indictment shows his history of corrupting law enforcement and Mexican public officials, extorting businesses in the Tijuana plaza, and his reputation for extreme violence, according to the Department of Justice statement. René Arzate García was designated by the U.S. Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) as a drug capo in 2023.

The U.S. Department of Justice accused René Arzate García, alias "La Rana," alleged plaza boss of the Sinaloa Cartel in Tijuana, of drug trafficking and material support for terrorism in connection with trafficking large quantities of fentanyl, cocaine, methamphetamine, and marijuana into the United States. Additionally, the U.S. State Department announced it is offering up to $5 million for information leading to the arrest or conviction of "La Rana" and his brother, Alfonso Arzate García, alias "Aquiles."

Criminal Profiles of the Capos According to court documents, René Arzate García is a "plaza boss" of the Sinaloa Cartel based in Baja California, Mexico, alongside his brother Alfonso Arzate García, alias "Aquiles." The U.S. alleges that Arzate García directs the cartel's drug trafficking operations in Tijuana and surrounding municipalities and participates in the importation of large quantities of illicit drugs into the United States, such as fentanyl, cocaine, methamphetamine, and marijuana.
