U.S. Senate Rejects Effort to Limit Trump's Iran War Powers

The U.S. Senate on Tuesday rejected the latest effort led by Democrats to limit President Donald Trump's powers regarding the war on Iran. The vote was nearly split along party lines, with 47 members voting against the proposal and 53 against it, meaning it failed to achieve the simple majority needed to proceed. All Republicans voted against the resolution, except for Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky, while all Democrats supported it, except for Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania. Earlier this month, Democrats introduced several resolutions related to war powers, aiming to prevent Trump from continuing military action against Iran without Congressional approval. They pledged to continue bringing these resolutions to a vote as a means of forcing public testimony from Trump administration officials on the conflict. Tuesday's vote on the resolution introduced by Democratic Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut was the third time since the February 28 military operation that Senate Republicans have blocked attempts to challenge Trump's authority to wage war on Iran. Another vote last year following strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities also failed.
