Study: AI Leads to Superficial Knowledge

U.S. researchers have found that using large language models to search for information instead of traditional internet services promotes the acquisition of knowledge at a superficial level and deprives users of the ability to discover new things on their own.

Study: AI Leads to Superficial Knowledge

A team of American researchers has warned that using artificial intelligence instead of searching for information via conventional internet tools leads to superficial knowledge, and any learning process quickly becomes 'passive.' The team stated in a research paper published in the journal 'PLOS Nexus', by the U.S. National Academy of Sciences: 'When individuals search for a topic through large language models of artificial intelligence, they risk acquiring more superficial knowledge than if they were to learn through traditional internet searches, even when the basic facts in the results are identical.' According to the team, AI chat programs have changed how students write texts and find information in schools and universities. Moreover, chat program users are depriving themselves of the opportunity to 'discover information for themselves.'
