White House Reports Collection of $235 Billion in Tariffs

The White House stated that the U.S. Treasury has collected $235 billion in customs tariffs since the beginning of this year. This claim was made by the White House during a live Christmas broadcast on its official YouTube channel, where it presented a list of "MAGA 2025 wins." The broadcast also highlighted other alleged successes of the Trump administration, such as immigration policy and the fight against the fentanyl crisis. The value of the customs revenue announced during the live broadcast is slightly higher than the amount previously cited by the Trump administration. Last week, U.S. Customs and Border Protection reported that customs revenue collected between Trump's inauguration on January 20 of last year and December 15 of this year reached a little over $200 billion. However, the total remains below expectations; in July of last year, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent had forecast reaching $300 billion by the end of the year. The U.S. Supreme Court is currently reviewing the legality of the tariffs imposed by Trump. Specifically, the court is examining whether Trump can impose unilateral tariffs under the 1977 National Emergencies Act without congressional approval. Lower courts had previously halted this policy following complaints from several U.S. companies and states. After taking office, Trump imposed tariffs on goods from multiple countries, citing concerns related to drugs like fentanyl, illegal immigration, and the trade deficit. The date of the Supreme Court's decision has not yet been clarified, and if the court rules against Trump, it could cast doubt on existing trade agreements.
