Tesla Develops Satellite Internet for Its Cars

Tesla has filed a patent for a new car roof technology that will enable satellite internet on the go. New polymer materials replace traditional glass and metal, providing a stable signal for travelers.

Tesla Develops Satellite Internet for Its Cars

Tesla may be on the verge of solving one of the biggest problems for long-distance travelers: a lack of internet connectivity. According to a recently published U.S. patent application, the company is considering redesigning a car's roof from scratch, moving away from traditional glass and metal in favor of materials that allow satellite signals to pass through easily. The patent describes a car roof made of polymers that allow radio signals to pass, according to a report from the technology news site Digital Trends. In short, Tesla aims to turn its car roofs into a window for data transmission. Traditional car roof materials like steel or even specialized glass act as a barrier, blocking or weakening the high-frequency signals needed for satellite internet. To solve this problem, Tesla is studying a mixture of high-strength polymers such as polycarbonate, ABS, and ASA. These are not just ordinary 'plastic' roofs; these materials are fundamental in the aerospace industry due to their exceptional strength. The patent details a four-layer structure that allows wireless frequencies to pass through by integrating satellite communication directly into the car's structure, while maintaining sufficient rigidity to ensure cabin quietness and safety.
