Japanese energy companies are looking to expand in the US oil and gas sector following renewed support from the Trump administration, which is pressuring Tokyo to increase its investments. Mitsubishi has signed an agreement to acquire Ethon Energy's US gas assets and pipeline assets for $5.2 billion, marking the largest acquisition by a Japanese company in the US shale gas sector. The Japanese company announced in a statement on Friday that it will purchase Ethon 3 Limited, Ethon United Limited, and related entities and interests from Ethon. The two companies had been working on the deal since at least mid-2025.
