Meta to Invest in Gas Plants for New US Data Center

Meta Platforms has reached an agreement with Entergy Corp. to build and finance seven new natural gas power plants to power its new Hyperion data center in Louisiana. This adds to the three gas plants already approved for the facility, bringing the total number of plants to ten. The combined power generation capacity will exceed 7 gigawatts. Meta will also fund the construction of 240 miles of transmission lines, as well as battery energy storage and nuclear power upgrades. The company states the agreement will generate over $2 billion in savings for customers over 20 years. However, the deal increases Meta's reliance on fossil fuels amid the race for artificial intelligence.
