Police in California are investigating the theft of over a thousand pieces from a collection at one of the museums, including metal jewelry and everyday items such as sports trophies that tell the story of the Golden State. The theft occurred in the early hours of October 15 at a storage facility outside the Oakland Museum of California, according to a press release from the Oakland Police Department issued last Wednesday. Lori Fogarty, the museum's director, stated on Thursday that the investigation is being conducted openly because the artifacts may appear in second-hand goods markets, antique shops, or pawn shops. She added, "This is not just a loss for the museum, but a loss for the public and our community, and we hope our community will help us recover them." She also noted that it appears to be an unpremeditated crime, a spur-of-the-moment act rather than a targeted art heist. She continued, "We believe the thieves found a way into the building, took whatever they could easily find, stole it, and left with it from the building."
