Authorities in St. Landry Parish, Louisiana, encountered a brazen jailbreak that could have been straight out of a 1970s prison movie. Over time, they removed enough mortar to pull out concrete blocks, creating a wide gap that allowed the three men to slip through and execute their daring escape, using bedsheets to climb an exterior wall. The sheriff's office identified the escapees as Keith Eley, 24, who was facing a second-degree attempted murder charge; Jonathan Jevon Joseph, 24, who was facing several charges, including first-degree rape; and Joseph Allen Harrington, 26, of Melville, who was facing several criminal charges, including home invasion. It was soon learned that each escapee took a different route upon exiting. Harrington, however, used a hunting rifle to take his own life. Police have confirmed they are deploying all their resources to capture the third escapee, 24-year-old Keith Eley. Three inmates escaped from the Opelousas jail last week after chipping away old concrete blocks from a weak wall and using bedsheets as ropes. Sheriff Bobby Guidroz confirmed the escape after they discovered what he called a "deteriorated part of the upper wall." Later, 24-year-old Jonathan Joseph was arrested after investigators traced a tip to a home. The 'Metro' newspaper, citing police, reported that Joseph ran to a nearby store but surrendered once officers had him cornered. 26-year-old Joseph Allen Harrington was found dead. Port Barrie Police Chief Dion Boudreaux stated that officers urged Harrington out of a home using a loudspeaker. As officers continue their search, Sheriff Guidroz is urging Eley to turn himself in. He said, "We prefer that Eley turns himself in peacefully," adding, "But we will not rest until he is captured."
