A serious fire broke out in a residential building in New York, injuring at least three people. According to the New York City Fire Department (FDNY), the fire started on Tuesday around 8:20 local time (13:20 GMT) in a six-story building located on the corner of 107th Street and Amsterdam Avenue in the Upper West Side, Manhattan. At a press conference near the residences, Paul Miano, the Chief of the Emergency Medical Service (EMS) of the Fire Department, stated that two residents and one firefighter were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. He also emphasized that one resident, who could not come down the stairs on their own, was rescued by firefighters and paramedics. The Chief of Operations for the department, Kevin Woods, noted that the affected building was not adequately protected against potential fires. Shortly after 9:00, the Fire Department raised the fire alarm level to 4. According to FDNY classification, level 4 indicates a serious fire requiring the deployment of a significant number of units and firefighters. The causes of the fire have not yet been determined. Local media reported that a part of the left side of the structure collapsed, resulting in a rain of debris onto the street. The FDNY warned on its website that emergency personnel, traffic, and smoke are likely to be in the area, and the city's Health Department advised avoiding smoke exposure by closing windows and reducing outdoor activities. Meanwhile, the city's Emergency Management Administration said on X that it has requested buses from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) to house evacuated residents. An image released by the agency shows flames consuming the roof and windows of the top floor of the building, while a large plume of smoke emerges from the upper part.
