Prison authorities in the U.S. state of South Carolina thwarted an unusual plot by inmates who attempted to organize a dinner party inside the prison by using drones to smuggle in gourmet food and drugs. The state's Department of Corrections said in a statement released last Monday that it recently intercepted a drone carrying a shipment that included food items and a quantity of marijuana to the high-security 'Lee' Correctional Institution. According to WIS 10, prison officials posted on social media a picture of the seized items, which included crab legs, the famous 'Old Bay' seasoning, cigarettes, and ready-to-cook steak slices—appearing to be a meal prepared for a large celebration within the cells. It is not yet clear if any individuals involved in the operation have been arrested, but local media reported that the inmates were planning a celebratory feast before the authorities foiled it. The incident has raised new questions about the increasing use of drones to smuggle contraband into American prisons and whether current security measures are sufficient to counter this type of criminal innovation.
