The Brown University community is in mourning following the violent incident at the Barus & Holley engineering building, where an "active shooter" was reported before being apprehended.
However, according to the Argentine News Agency, the educational center confirmed with "deep regret" the death of two victims, while the eight injured individuals were transported to nearby hospitals and are "in critical but stable condition".
The active shooter alert was received by local police, and the university notified students around 17:00 local time (22:00 GMT), urging them to take immediate shelter and follow the instructions of law enforcement.
Consequently, the Brown and Providence police departments immediately responded to the scene, initiating intense coordination with "multiple law enforcement agencies".
While the university maintained a "continuing situation" status and urged students to follow the safety protocol (RUN, HIDE, FIGHT), U.S. President Donald Trump used his social media platform, Truth Social, to announce the end of the emergency.
"I have been briefed on the shooting at Brown University in Rhode Island," Trump posted.
The initial alert instructed the university community to: "Lock doors, silence phones, and remain in place until further notice," a situation that paralyzed the Providence campus.
