A California man says he has reached his breaking point after months of failed attempts to remove a massive bear living under his home. Kenneth Johnson, of Altadena, is threatening legal action against the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, alleging negligence and emotional distress after the state, as claimed, stopped intervening in the case of the 250-kilogram bear residing beneath his house. According to KTLA, Johnson believes the department abandoned efforts to resolve the issue, despite the bear being tagged and known to wildlife officials. "It's gone on long enough, it's their job to handle it," Johnson told the station. He stated that in December, wildlife officials attempted to capture the bear but ended up trapping another animal instead. "They chose not to kill it, and now it's back, and it's going to keep doing it," he said. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife refuted Johnson's claims in a statement provided to PEOPLE, asserting they maintained effective communication despite limited staffing. The department explained that biologists have been in constant contact with the homeowner since the bear entered the unsecured crawl space under his home in November. Officials set baited traps, installed remote monitoring cameras and lights, and repeatedly tried to deter the bear from the property. After a surveillance camera was set up, it captured footage of the bear walking near the home before subsequently crawling directly into the crawl space. "When I saw everything torn up, I thought he wasn't there, because it's impossible for a bear to get in that place," Johnson told NBC Los Angeles. "I don't know how he got in there. They've dealt with him before. He must be a circus performer. He's a tagged bear," he added.
