U.S. authorities have canceled more than 9,000 flights scheduled for the beginning of the week as a major storm approaches. Around 140 million people are under a warning for a winter storm stretching from New Mexico to New England. The National Weather Service forecasts widespread heavy snowfall and a catastrophic band of ice stretching from eastern Texas to North Carolina. Weather experts warn that damage, especially in areas of heavy freezing rain, could be comparable to that caused by hurricanes.
