WhatsApp, owned by Meta, is testing a new feature on Android that brings AI tools together in one place, making them more accessible to users.

WhatsApp Tests New AI Button for Android

WhatsApp, owned by Meta, is testing a new feature that could change the way users interact with the app through a custom button that brings AI tools together in one easy-to-access interface. This step reflects the accelerating competition in the world of smart messaging apps. The new test targets Android smartphone users and aims to integrate AI capabilities into the daily messaging experience more seamlessly, allowing users to quickly access the Meta AI assistant without having to navigate through multiple sections within the app.

According to WABetaInfo, a site that specializes in tracking WhatsApp updates, the app is testing the addition of a new AI-specific tab in the bottom navigation bar. This tab will appear alongside the Chats, Updates, and Calls sections, serving as a central hub that brings together all the AI tools that Meta develops within the app. Through this page, users will be able to quickly access chats with the smart assistant, along with other AI-powered tools.

To make room for the new feature, WhatsApp will be modifying the app's interface by removing the 'Communities' tab from the bottom navigation bar. However, this change will not affect how communities are used, as users will still be able to manage and access community chats easily through the Chats section, a mechanism that was added in a previous update. The new feature will not be limited to just chatting; it will offer a suite of smart tools that allow users to perform multiple tasks within the app. Through the new tab, users can: ask questions to the smart assistant, create and animate images with AI, explore suggestions to help start conversations, and easily interact with AI assistants.

This move aims to make AI an essential part of the daily WhatsApp experience. As part of the experimental update, WhatsApp has also added a voice interaction feature within the AI tab. Users will be able to start an instant voice conversation with the Meta AI assistant by pressing the voice button in the search bar, and an additional shortcut will appear at the top of the screen to allow for a direct voice call with the smart assistant. The new page will include a dedicated section to display past conversations with AI, where each new interaction is recorded in a separate thread.

In a manner similar to the chatbots offered by Google and OpenAI, the system will automatically generate titles for each conversation, making it easier for users to find a specific conversation later. For now, the new Meta AI button is available in the beta version of WhatsApp for Android, while the company has not confirmed an official release date for the feature. However, reports suggest that the feature could roll out to users in the coming weeks after the testing phase is over.
