After birth, the baby is handed over to the parents, as the surrogate relinquishes her maternity through a contract.
There are various reasons why one might resort to surrogacy, such as the absence of a uterus, uterine abnormalities, illnesses that prevent pregnancy, repeated miscarriages, single women who wish to be mothers, or same-sex couples.
