Surrogacy is a medical process that allows people who cannot conceive a child themselves the opportunity to become parents. Also known as 'gestational surrogacy', it involves a woman carrying the baby of another couple, using the genetic material from the father and mother. In necessary cases, an egg donor may be used. After birth, the baby is handed over to the parents, as the surrogate relinquishes her maternity through a contract.

There are various reasons why one might resort to surrogacy, such as the absence of a uterus, uterine abnormalities, illnesses that prevent pregnancy, repeated miscarriages, single women who wish to be mothers, or same-sex couples.

Lily Collins, a well-known actress from Netflix series, recently welcomed her first child conceived through surrogacy. Her husband, Charlie McDowell, a film director, responded to the criticism they received for this choice, highlighting that it is okay to be inexperienced in the subject and that spreading hate is not worthwhile.

On his personal Instagram account, McDowell defended his decision, while Collins shared the news of their baby's arrival on the same platform. She publicly thanked the surrogate and everyone involved in this exciting journey towards parenthood.
