Coffee's Heart Benefits: Study

A new study shows that a daily cup of coffee is not only safe for people with arrhythmia but may also reduce the risk of recurrent episodes by 47% due to its anti-inflammatory properties.

Coffee's Heart Benefits: Study

A recent scientific study has revealed unexpected benefits of drinking coffee. Researchers concluded that consuming one cup of coffee daily may help prevent the recurrence of atrial fibrillation, and it is completely safe for people who suffer from this condition.

The study, led by Dr. Gregory Marcus, a professor of cardiology at the University of California, San Francisco, was presented at the annual American Heart Association conference in New Orleans and published in the prestigious medical journal 'JAMA'.

The experiment involved 200 elderly participants from Australia, Canada, and the United States, with an average age of 70. The participants were divided into two groups: the first completely stopped consuming caffeine, while the second continued to drink coffee daily.

Dr. Marcus stated: 'I was surprised by how effective caffeinated coffee is in reducing the risk of recurrent atrial fibrillation.'

Dr. Joanna Contreras, a cardiologist at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, confirmed that one cup of coffee a day is perfectly safe for people with heart rhythm disorders, emphasizing that moderation is key. She also warned against excessive consumption of other stimulant drinks, such as energy drinks, due to their high caffeine content, which can have the opposite effect.

Researchers speculate that the reason for this positive effect is due to the anti-inflammatory compounds in coffee, which may help improve blood vessel function and reduce oxidative stress, which contributes to atrial fibrillation.

Over six months of close follow-up, the results showed that people who continued drinking coffee were 47% less likely to have recurrent episodes of atrial fibrillation compared to 64% in the group that stopped consuming it.
