Rare Syndrome Causes American to Speak Spanish After Surgery

A 33-year-old American man, Stephen Chase, suffers from a rare foreign language syndrome, after each surgical operation he wakes up speaking Spanish, although he did not know the language before.

Rare Syndrome Causes American to Speak Spanish After Surgery

According to the National Library of Medicine, this syndrome can result from a number of factors, including brain injuries, tumors, stress, and general anesthesia. Chase's case is characterized by the recurring appearance of the foreign language syndrome in him after several surgeries over more than a decade. He remembers everything that is said to him in English, and only later discovers that he is fluent in Spanish. The 33-year-old lawyer was diagnosed with foreign language syndrome, an extremely rare medical condition, with only about 100 confirmed cases recorded since its discovery in 1907. During that period, he underwent several surgeries for sports injuries, and most recently, a nose job, and each time he woke up from anesthesia, he spoke fluent Spanish. Stephen Chase says: 'The nurses say they ask me things like: how are you? Are you in pain? After I wake up, and I answer these questions in Spanish. Despite his basic knowledge of Spanish, he was able to speak it fluently for about 20 minutes after waking up from surgery before returning to English.' Chase told LadBible: 'I wasn't speaking Spanish.' Chase, a father of three from Salt Lake City, Utah, does not remember speaking Spanish; he only remembers that the nurses asked him to speak English after he woke up from surgery, which greatly confused him. I studied Spanish in high school for a year, and my level was very modest, I probably could count to 10 and knew a few simple phrases. Stephen Chase was 19 years old when he woke up from knee surgery speaking fluent Spanish, even though before the operation he only knew how to count to 10 in that foreign language. When the 33-year-old man was asked why he mastered Spanish in particular, he replied that he believes it is related to his upbringing among people of Spanish origin and constantly hearing the language, although he never bothered to understand it. Inside, I just speak, and I don't understand why they don't understand me.
